Amantea (Calabria): what to see

What to see in Amatea, a pleasant coastal town in Calabria washed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, whose historic center is surrounded by medieval walls, an itinerary including the castle and the Church of San Bernardino da Siena, as well as boat excursions to the nearby Isca rocks.


Tourist information

Located at the foot of the Paolana chain and at the mouth of the Catocastro river, Amantea is a town of very ancient origins, perhaps even prior to the Roman era.

Byzantine fortress during the medieval period, in the 9th century it was chosen by the Saracens as a naval base.


The historic center is surrounded by what remains of the ancient medieval city wall, it also includes the Castle located at the top of the hill.

Of the castle dating back to the Byzantine-Norman era, enlarged and modified several times over the centuries, some remains of walls and a cylindrical tower remain.

What see

It is worth visiting the church of San Bernardino da Siena, dating back to the fifteenth century, which boasts a beautiful porch with Gothic-style arches.

Inside two naves, valuable sculptures are preserved, including the Madonna with Child, a work by the sculptor Gagini from 1505, as well as other fifteenth-century sculptures attributed to the artist Francesco da Milano.

Currently Manatea is a renowned seaside resort, with a good tourist flow especially during the summer season, from which you can reach the Scogli d'Isca by boat, small rocky rocks not far from the shore, from which you can admire the wonderful seabed .
