San Giorgio di Lydda

Born in Cappadocia around the year 280 and died in Nicomedia on April 23, 303, George was a Christian martyr today revered as a saint by almost all Christian churches.

Educated in the Christian religion by his parents, after moving to Palestine, he enlisted in the army of Emperor Diocletian and showed that he was a valiant soldier, to the point of being chosen to become part of the bodyguard of Diocletian himself, assuming the position of militia officer.

At some point in his life, Giorgio decided to donate all his possessions to the poor, publicly confessing to himself as a Christian.

He was invited by the emperor to renounce his Christian faith, but Giorgio refused.

Legend has it that he was then beaten, suspended and torn, before being thrown into prison, where God appeared to him who announced seven years of torments, three times his death and three times his resurrection.

Popular tradition depicts him as a knight facing the dragon, a scene that symbolizes the triumph of intrepid faith over the tempting force of the evil one.
