St. Pius V

Born in Bosco Marengo near Alessandria on 17 January 1504 and died in Rome on 1 May 1572, Antonio Michele Ghislieri was a Dominican religious who became bishop of Rome and Pope of the Catholic Church from 7 January 1566 until the date of his death.

His pontificate applied the directives of the Council of Trent by carrying out a wide range of theological and liturgical reforms.


The changes made made Pope Ghislieri one of the highest exponents of the Counter-Reformation, together with Carlo Borromeo and Ignazio di Loyola.

Having become famous for the high asceticism and moral rigor that characterized him, he devoted much energy to the severe repression of heresy, with consequences also on the administration of the Papal States and on foreign policy.

His figure was linked, in an indissoluble way, to the complicated diplomatic process that culminated in the establishment of the Holy League and in the victorious Battle of Lepanto in 1571.


In 1672 he was beatified by Pope Clement X, while on May 22, 1712 Pope Clement XI made him Saint.
