Castrovillari (Calabria): what to see

post-title

What to see in Castrovillari, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Civita, Aragonese Castle, Church of San Giuliano, Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Castello and Archaeological Museum.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Cosenza, within a vast basin located in the Coscile Valley and at the foot of Monte Pollino, Castrovillari has origins that probably date back to the early medieval period.

The inhabited center of Castrovillari is composed of an ancient nucleus, called the Civita and placed on top of a spur, and a modern part in a flat area.

The Castle, a quadrangular building with imposing towers, was built by the Aragonese in 1490.

Nearby is the Church of San Giuliano, characterized by an interesting portal.

What see

The Sanctuary Church of Santa Maria del Castello, which stands isolated on top of a hill, was built by the Normans in 1090 and later rebuilt.

The cult building, preceded by a portico, has a remarkable Gothic portal on the right side.

Among the works preserved in the suggestive interior with three naves stands out the Madonna and Child, an image much venerated by the faithful.

In the Archaeological Museum, housed in Palazzo Gallo, interesting finds from the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods are exhibited, as well as remains of iron age ceramics, medieval objects and a large collection of works of art, including paintings, sculptures and drawings, made in the twentieth century by Andrea Alfano, local artist.
