Crotone (Calabria): what to see

post-title

What to see in Crotone, a city of Calabria with ancient origins, an itinerary including the main monuments of the historic center, including the Duomo and the Castle of Santa Severina.

Tourist information

Crotone, one of the major industrial centers in Calabria, is the only port in Calabria located on the Ionian Sea.

The ancient origins of Crotone date back to the Greek people of the Achaeans, who founded the city on a rocky promontory and made it become one of the major centers of Magna Grecia.

Of the ancient Greek city, which was the home of Pythagoras and Milone the athlete, only a few traces remain, which came to light after some archaeological excavations.

Distinguished by narrow and winding alleys, the historic center of Crotone is surrounded by sixteenth-century walls, the construction of which was commissioned by Don Pedro de Toledo, at the time viceroy of Naples.

What see

The Cathedral of Crotone, dating back to the eleventh century but later remodeled several times, has an interior with three naves where the image of the Black Madonna is preserved which, according to tradition, was transported to the place from the east in the early years when Christianity was beginning to spread.

The Castle of Santa Severina, dating back to the eleventh century, was built on commission from Don Pedro de Toledo, who was at that time viceroy of Naples.

The fortress has a polygonal plan and includes cylindrical towers placed at the corners, as well as imposing defensive walls.

Currently inside the castle there is the Civic Museum of Crotone, where it is possible to see the archaeological finds of ancient Kroton.

The most renowned gastronomic specialty of Crotone is represented by cavatelli, a type of homemade pasta, with a very similar appearance to orecchiette, to be seasoned with sauce and ricotta.
