San Nicola di Bari

It is a truly universal saint, the cult of St. Nicholas of Bari has indeed arrived even in Russia, the land of which he became patron.

Born in Patara on March 15, 270, Nicola spent his life in Lycia, a region of Asia Minor, at the time of Constantine, and was bishop of Mira.

Raised by Christian and wealthy parents, he was soon orphaned due to the epidemic caused by the plague that decimated the population.

He inherited a huge patrimony that he could distribute among the poor, a gesture that earned him the reputation of great benefactor.

He subsequently abandoned Patara and moved to Myra, where he was ordained first priest and, subsequently, upon the death of his predecessor, the new bishop of the city.

Imprisoned and exiled in 305 during the persecution of Diocletian, he was later freed by Constantine in 313 and was thus able to resume his apostolic activity.

He distinguished himself for the remarkable charity shown towards the poor and the weakest.

He died in Myra on December 6, 343, probably in the Zion monastery.

His relics arrived in Bari only on 9 May 1087, where they were received with great enthusiasm by the population.
