San Policarpo
Polycarp, born in Smyrna in about 69 and died in the same place on February 23, 155, was an ancient Greek bishop, theologian and saint.
Disciple of John the Apostle, he was appointed bishop of Smyrna during the reign of Trajan.
He was highly regarded as a theologian and was one of the most esteemed pastors of the time.
Of his numerous writings, only a Letter to the Philippians has been received, in which he provides the account of Ignatius of Antioch's trip to Smyrna and from which he obtains numerous information on the uses and faith of the early Christians.
He was master of Irenaeus of Lyon, founder of churches in the Gauls and his biographer.
According to tradition, he would have sent Benigno from Dijon, Andochio, Andeolo del Vivarais and Tirso to Gaul, today revered as saints in the Catholic Church, to evangelize the country.
