San Girolamo Emiliani

Born in Venice in 1486, Jerome followed his military career first, but later decided to devote himself to the aid of the poor by distributing them all the goods he possessed.

His action is linked to that of Sant'Antonio Maria Zaccaria and San Gaetano Thiene, his contemporaries and founders of Societies and Congregations for the secular clergy.

During a plague he was infected by the patients he attended and died in 1537.

In 1928 he was declared universal patron of orphans and abandoned youth.
