Where is it, territory, climate and economy Dakota, what to visit in North Dakota and South Dakota. North Dakota, consisting of 53 counties, is part of the United States and owes its name to the group of Sioux, one of the peoples originating in the United States.

Geographically, it is found in the central-northern part of the United States bordering Canada to the north, South Dakota to the south, Minnesota to the east and Montana to the west.


In the eastern part there are very fertile plains ending with the Red River while in the western part a still flat but arid part called the Badlands prevails.

The economy of this state is mainly based on agriculture. Livestock breeding, mostly cattle, is widespread especially in the east but also in the west, while lignite deposits are found in the subsoil near the borders with Saskatchewan.

In North Dakota, the major cities are Bismarck and Fargo.


Bismarck, which is the capital of this state as well as the capital of Burleigh County, is crossed by the Missouri River, and owes its name to the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck.

Fargo, the county seat of Cass County and located in the Red River Valley region, represents an economic center imported into the area popular especially for business trips.

South Dakota, made up of 66 counties, is a state geographically located in the high plains of the northern Middle West, and, like North Dakota, takes its name from the Sioux tribe.


To the north it borders with North Dakota, to the south with Nebraska, to the east with Iowa and Minnesota, and to the west with Wyoming and Montana.

In the central part it is crossed by the Missouri River with low hills to the east and deep canyons to the west.

Wanting to make a subdivision it is possible to subdivide South Dakota into the four regions of Drift Prairie, the Dissected Till Plains, the Great Plains and the Black Hills.

In the Drift Prairie of are low hills and glacial lakes, the Dissected Till Plains are located in the south-eastern part, the Great Plains extend for most of the western part of the state, while the Black Hills appear less hospitable.

The main rivers of South Dakota are the Cheyenne River, Missouri, the James River and the White River while among the largest lakes we can include Lake Oahe, Lake Francis Case and Lake Lewis and Clark.

The climate in South Dakota is continental with summer temperatures around 30 degrees as the maximum and minimum winter temperatures that can even reach a few degrees below zero.

The major cities are Pierre and Sioux Falls. Pierre, the state capital and county seat of Hughes County, is famous for its Memorial Hall.

Sioux Falls is the city with the most inhabitants.
