Nosy Be, a name that translated into Italian means large island, is an island located just off the northwestern coast of Madagascar, within the Mozambique channel and belonging to the province of Antsiranana.
It is a volcanic island that covers an area of about 300 square km, where Mount Lokobe, with its 450 meters above sea level, represents the highest point.
The economy of the island of Nosy Be focuses mainly on tourism and agriculture, with crops mainly of coffee, cocoa, vanilla and cinnamon.
The climate of Nosy Be favors tourism with an annual average of 27 degrees and low percentages of humidity.
The Tsaratanana Massif acts as a shelter for the island from the strong northern winds that characterize all of Madagascar in August, while the waters of the Mozambique channel have a temperature high enough to be called hot throughout the year.
In the summer, which includes the months of December, January and February and March, the humidity is higher than in other periods of the year due to the night rains and the intense heat that characterizes the daytime hours; moreover, the phenomenon of cyclones is not uncommon.
What to see in Nosy Be
The island is home to the Lokobe nature reserve with the function of conserving what is left of the tropical rainforest that once covered much of the island.
Around Nosy Be there are other smaller islands, some of which are well organized from a tourism point of view, including Nosy Komba, Nosy Mitsio, Nosy Sakatia, Nosy Tanikely, the Radama and Nosy Iranja islands. Andoany is the capital city of the island.
The eleven volcanic lakes present represent an important water resource necessary for the cultivation and survival of crocodiles.
As for the landscape, it is very varied and dominated by large hills and minor reliefs, including the already mentioned Lokobe and Mount Passot.
