Dedication of the Lateran Basilica
The origin of the celebration of the anniversary of the dedication of the basilica, built at the behest of the emperor Constantine on the Lateran hill, dates back to the twelfth century.
Initially it was a party limited only to the city of Rome.
Subsequently the celebration was extended to all the churches that followed the Roman rite.
With this feast we intend to honor the basilica which is considered the mother church of all the churches of Rome and the world, as a sign of love and unity of Christians towards the chair of San Pietro which, as stated by St. Ignatius of Antioch, presides to the whole assembly of charity.
At the time of Christian persecutions, every manifestation of faith proved dangerous and therefore Christians could not celebrate their God openly.
For all Christians, the Lateran basilica became the place where they could finally worship and publicly celebrate Christ the Savior.
This building of stones thus became the symbol of victory, honoring the numerous martyrs.
