Who was St. Joseph, what news has been passed down, where does the definition of Jesus' putative father come from, how did he learn that Mary his Promised Bride was expecting a child and his reaction.

Biography of Saint Joseph

St. Joseph, according to what is described in the New Testament of the Holy Bible, is the spouse of Mary and the putative father of Jesus, venerated as a saint not only by the Catholic Church but also by the Orthodox Church.

The name Giuseppe is none other than the Italian translation of the Hebrew Yosef, Giuseppe, Maria and baby Jesus are universally recognized with the definition of the Holy Family.

The four Gospels and Christian doctrine declare that the authentic father of Jesus is God, in that Mary conceived him for a miraculous event, without having known man, for the exclusive intervention of the Holy Spirit.

Joseph agreed to marry Mary, following a dream he had in which he learned of what had happened, and legally recognized Jesus as his legitimate son.

For this reason the Christian tradition calls him the putative father of Jesus, a term deriving from the Latin puto, that is to say, I mean, he who was believed to be his father in all respects.

The information reported by the Gospels on Saint Joseph is very scarce, only Matthew and Luke speak of him, saying that Joseph was of the descent of David and lived in the small city of Nazareth.

The Catholic Church celebrates Saint Joseph on March 19th with solemn masses dedicated to him.
