Psalm 77: complete, commentary

post-title

CommentThe author of Psalm 77 can be described as a pious Jew, who stayed in Palestine at the time of deportation to Babylon. The holidays spent in Jerusalem and in the temple, now destroyed for several years, are remembered with pain and the sad situation that Israel had to suffer was taken into consideration.

Psalm 77 complete

[1] To the choir master. On "Iditum". Asaph Psalm.

[2] My voice rises to God and I cry for help; my voice rises to God as long as you listen to me.

[3] On the day of anguish I seek the Lord, all night my hand is stretched and does not tire; I refuse any comfort.

[4] I remember God and moan, meditate and my spirit is failing.

[5] You keep my eyes from sleep, I am troubled and speechless.

[6] I think back to the past days, I remember the distant years.

[7] A song in the night returns to my heart: I reflect and my spirit is questioning.

[8] Perhaps God will reject us forever, will he no longer be kind to us?

[9] Has his love ceased forever, has his promise ended forever?

[10] Can God have forgotten mercy, closed his heart in anger?

[11] And I said: "This is my torment: the right hand of the Most High has changed."

[12] I remember the deeds of the Lord, I remember your wonders of the past.

[13] I go repeating your works, I consider all your deeds.

[14] O God, holy is your way; which god is as big as our god?

[15] You are the God who works wonders, manifest your strength among the nations.

[16] It is your arm that has saved your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph.

[17] They saw the waters of you, God, they saw you and were shocked by them; the depths also jumped.

[18] The clouds spilled water, thunder broke out in the sky; your arrows flashed.

[19] The roar of your thunder in the whirlwind, your lightning lightened the world, the earth shook and was shaken.

[20] On the sea your way passed, your paths on the great waters and your footprints remained invisible.

[21] You led your people as flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
