Teramo (Abruzzo): what to see

post-title

What to see in Teramo, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, from the Cathedral of San Bernardo to the Roman Theater, to get to the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie.

Tourist information

City of ancient origins, Teramo probably dates back to the Phoenician era, later it was conquered by the Romans who called it Interamnia, a term that had the meaning of "land between two rivers".

Remains of various temples and other buildings, in addition to the thermal baths and the Roman theater, testify to the great urban development that occurred during the Roman era.

The medieval city, which arose in the same area where the Roman city once stood, is characterized by narrow, winding streets.

The Cathedral of San Berardo, which dates back to the medieval period, was remodeled several times, until a restoration took place in 1934, which returned the ancient medieval aspect to the place of worship.

Inside the Cathedral there are some works of considerable artistic value, including a Madonna and Child Enthroned in the twelfth century, a silver bust of San Berardo, a wooden crucifix of the fourteenth century, the silver antependium by Nicola da Guardiagrele and the Polyptych of Iacobello del Fiore.

What see

Also worth a visit are the church of Sant’Antoniola from 1127, the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, the Convent of San Giovanni, the Civic Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Pinacoteca.

The Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, located just outside the walls, dates back to 1153 and originates from the church which was part of a Benedictine monastery named after Sant'Angelo delle Donne.

In 1448 the building was enlarged with the aim of being able to accommodate the minor friars of San Giacomo della Marca.

At the beginning of the twentieth century the church was restored and the appearance of the facade was changed.

Inside you can admire frescoes by Cesare Mariani, depicted as a great old man with a beard in the fresco of the Nativity scene.
