Acciaroli (Campania): what to see

post-title

What to see in Acciaroli, an itinerary including the main places of interest, including the historic center, the marina, the Church of the Annunciation, Torre Caleo and Spiaggia Grande.

Tourist information

A small seaside resort in Campania, Acciaroli is a fraction of Pollica and is located in the province of Salerno, the American writer Ermest Hemingway made it one of his favorite places to stay.

Thanks to its beaches and the quality of its sea, as well as being inserted in the Cilento and Vallo di Diano national park, Acciaroli is considered one of the most beautiful places in Cilento, very popular especially in the summer and able to offer an excellent tourist reception throughout the year.

The first human settlements in the Acciaroli area date back to remote times, then, due to the Saracen raids, the inhabitants found refuge in the surrounding hills, abandoning the marine area they had initially chosen.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, coastal towers were built, with a function of sighting and defense, including Torre Caleo and Torre Nuova, both connected with the tower that overlooked the sea from the top of the hill.

What see

The inhabited center, which stands out for the stone houses built directly on the rocks and connected to the road by means of walkways, presents itself with the typical aspect of the seaside village, equipped with squares, small streets and shops typical of the place.

The small tourist port, which connects Acciaroli with Salerno and other Cilento coastal towns, is equipped with the necessary equipment and services for pleasure boats.

The church dedicated to the Annunciation, dating back to 1100 but restored several times over time, with its bell tower, is worth a visit.

In the many restaurants located on the seafront you can taste excellent fresh fish caught near the coast.

At Acciaroli there are numerous beaches, including the large beach, characterized by fine sand, the beach located near the port, where the typical fishermen's houses overlook, and the stone beach, which extends to the Caleo rocks.

Among the events held during the year, it is worth mentioning the event that takes place in the period before Easter, on the occasion of Good Friday, the day on which it is possible to attend the pilgrimage of the members of the Confraternities who, dressed in colorful traditional uniforms, retrace the rites that recall the passion of Christ, accompanying everything with suggestive ancient songs.

Very nice to see is also the procession by sea which takes place after dinner on the second Sunday of August.

During this procession, the statue of the Santissima Annunziata is deposited on a large boat and transported from east to west, going through the ancient fishing sites.

In the surroundings of Acciaroli there are the towns of Palinuro, Casalvelino and Santa Maria di Castellabate.
