Altomonte (Calabria): what to see

post-title

What to see in Altomonte, a town in Calabria in the province of Cosenza, an itinerary including the churches of Santa Maria della Consolazione and San Francesco di Paola, as well as the imposing castle.

Tourist information

Located on a promontory at 455 meters above sea level, Altomonte is located in a very fertile territory, for a flat part, washed by the Esaro, Grondi and Fiumicello rivers, and a hilly part, where you can appreciate a vast panorama.

In the historic center the church of Santa Maria della Consolazione deserves to be visited, which is considered one of the best Gothic churches in Calabria.

This place of worship, which was built in the fourteenth century over a pre-existing sacred building, has an interior with a single nave, where some works are preserved, including the funeral Munumento by Filippo Sangineto, a work attributed to the Neapolitan school of Tino di Camaino.

Outside, on the side of the church there is a massive bell tower.

What see

In the complex of the Church of San Francesco di Paola there is the Civic Museum, where sculptures, furnishings and altarpieces are preserved.

The historic center of Altomonte today, which was built over an ancient fortified nucleus, has maintained its original medieval setting over time.

At the top of the hill of the town stands the magnificent Castle that dominates the entire plain below with its imposing shape.
