Saint Ugo of Grenoble
Hugh of Grenoble was born in 1053 in Chateauneuf Sur Lers, in the Dauphiné, and died in Grenoble on April 1, 1132 after exercising the ministry of bishop in this city for fifty-two years.
Although he was born into a noble family, he was educated by his mother to a life of almsgiving, marked by frequent prayer and fasting.
Became bishop of Grenoble at the age of only 27, he managed to maintain a fair balance between the strong attraction for the hermit life he felt and his mission as Bishop, carried out constantly with great commitment, keeping faith with the reforming spirit of the Church imposed by Pope Gregory VII.
In his episcopal work he distinguished himself for the fight against simony and nicolaism, as well as for the great effort made to keep the customs of the clergy dignified.
In 1084 he gave Bruno of Cologne the land necessary to build the first Abbey of the Carthusian Order.
Ugo da Grenoble was declared a saint by Pope Innocent II on April 22, 1134.
