Sant’Anselmo d’Aosta

Born in about 1033 in Aosta to noble parents, he had a troubled relationship with the family who entrusted his training to a relative.

At fifteen he felt strongly in him the vocation to become a friar, but being the contrary parents, he decided to leave.

After three years spent moving between Burgundy and central France, he went to Avranches in Normandy, the place where the abbey of Bec was located with its school founded in 1034.

In Avranches he met the prior of the abbey Lanfranco di Pavia who followed him on his study path.

In 1060 Anselmo entered the Benedictine seminary of Bec, where he was entrusted with the position of prior.

The profound theological research carried out in that place made him count among the best experts in the field in the western world.

In 1093 he was elected archbishop of Canterbury then, due to conflicts with the political world, he was forced to go into exile in Rome twice.

He died in Canterbury in 1109.
