Arnica properties

This herbaceous plant shows a robust rhizome and an erect floral scape, with a height varying between twenty and fifty centimeters, having two pairs of leaves.

The leaves do not have a peduncle, moreover they are a little leathery and form a basal rosette.


The flower heads are solitary but sometimes the scape branches and can also carry three flower heads instead of just one.

These are large, with yellow-rimmed peripheral flowers and the central ones also yellow but tubular.

Arnica must be considered as a dangerous plant, in fact, its preparations in high doses can cause serious stomach and intestine disorders, with phenomena of nausea, vomiting, blood diarrhea and paralysis of the nerve centers.


Externally, Arnica tincture, obtained by macerating the flowers and roots in alcohol, considering ten grams of drug per hundred alcohol, is useful in bruises, blood sprays, sprains and all accidents caused by falls.

For this vulnerable characteristic, in mountain villages it is also known by the name of grass of the falls.

The tincture must be lengthened with 50% water and is used by preparing compresses on the injured part, to be carried out as soon as possible, repeating the operation several times.

In case you want to medicate a wound from which blood has come out, you need to dilute the water to 20%.
