Arquà Petrarca (Veneto): what to see

post-title

What to see in Arquà Petrarca, a village where Petrarca's tomb and house are located, an itinerary including the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the oratory of the Trinity.

Tourist information

Small village already known in Roman times, during the Middle Ages it was under the dominion of the Podestàs of Padua, while between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries it was the residence of the vicars of the Republic of San Marco.

At the center of the suggestive small main square is Petrarca's tomb, built in the fourteenth century in red Verona marble, on a base formed by pillars and a trachyte base.

Behind the tomb is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses a remarkable cycle of frescoes from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

What see

Very interesting, for the relics it houses, is the Casa del Petrarca, where the poet lived until his death, built in the fourteenth century on two floors and subsequently reworked in the sixteenth century.

The interior of the building is decorated with paintings having subjects inspired by Petrarch's poetry.

On the San Marco square is located the oratory of the Trinity, a simple construction of 1100 enlarged in 1300, which preserves a beautiful Pala di Palma il Giovane.

Next to it is the Loggia dei Vicari, a structure of which only an arch remains with the lion of the Republic of San Marco and the coats of arms of the vicars on its top.
