post-title

Tourist information

The origins of Atella date back to the Angevin period, between 1320 and 1330, although some archaeological finds testify to the presence of human settlements in the area as early as the Paleolithic era.

Over the centuries a city wall was built around the city, with two access doors and a castle with cylindrical towers.

Of the two initial gates only one remains, that of San Michele, of the towers today only the Sant 'Eligio is visible.

What see

Among the monuments of the historic center that deserves to be visited, there is the Cathedral of Santa Maria ad Nives, in Durazzesco style and dating back to the sixteenth century.

Only the base of the church bell tower remains, following the serious damage caused by the earthquake that occurred in 1980.

The interior of the Cathedral of Santa Maria ad Nives has a single nave including side chapels, there are wooden statues from the 1300s and a fresco from the same period, depicting the Crucifixion.

Also worth seeing is the small medieval church of Santa Lucia, where you can admire the fresco of the Reparatory Madonna, as well as the Benedictine monastery and the Convent of Santa Maria degli Angeli, located just outside the village.

Interesting remains of prehistoric settlements are visible in the green area of the Paleolithic Park.
