San Filippo Benizi
Filippo Benizi, born in Florence on August 15, 1233 and died in Todi on August 23, 1285, was an Italian priest of the Order of the Servants of Mary, of which Father Superior was elected in 1267, also Pope Clement X proclaimed him a saint in 1671.
Filippo had to be a doctor in the intentions of his parents and for this he was first assigned a good tutor, then he was sent to Paris, where Frescobaldi's uncles had merchant relations, finally he attended the University of Padua, where he graduated in 1253.
After returning to Florence, Filippo for some years actually practiced the art of the doctor, but with little satisfaction, for this reason he decided to enter the Order of the Servants of Mary in Montesenario, first as a lay brother, then as a priest.
In 1267 he was elected Prior General, holding this pastoral office until his death.
He directed the Order with great balance and humility, also founding its female branch with Giuliana Falconieri, thanks to an untiring organizational and pastoral activity.
In 1269, on the occasion of the Viterbo conclave gathered to elect the successor of Clement IV, it seems that the name of Filippo Benizi was made to elect him Pope.
According to tradition, it was for this reason that Filippo lost his tracks by taking refuge in a hermitage in the woods of Bagni San Filippo on the slopes of Monte Amiata.
This would explain why Filippo Benizi is often represented in the iconography with a papal miter, probably to remember his renunciation of the papal office.
Filippo Benizi died in Todi on August 22, 1285, in one of the convents of the Order.
Revered as a saint immediately, his cult was ratified only in 1671 by Clement X.
