post-title

What to see in Bagnaia, itinerary including a visit to the garden of Villa Lante, with its spectacular water games and two twin buildings, the Palazzo della Loggia with its frescoes and the annual ritual of the sacred fire.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Viterbo, along the stretch of the Via Francigena that passes between the slopes of the Cimini Mountains, Bagnaia is famous above all for the beautiful Italian garden of Villa Lante and for the Sacro fuoco, a gigantic pile of wood to cremate the corpses , over 8 meters high, which is lit on January 16 of each year.

Villa Lante, built following a project by Vignola in the second half of the sixteenth century by Cardinal Gambara, is a remarkable example of a late Renaissance residence, including a park designed according to the typical uses of Italy.

To remember in particular the Fontana dei Mori, created by Giambologna, the two buildings containing cycles of frescoes and a spectacular system of fountains and water features, as well as a beautiful park characterized by thick vegetation.

What see

The gardens represent the main attraction of Villa Lante, especially with the water features present, including waterfalls, fountains and dripping grottini.

The perfection of the flow of the waters, flowing in a harmonious way, was achieved after the development carried out by a hydraulic architecture specialist who had been specially brought from Siena, whose name was Tommaso Ghinucci.

In the past, Bagnaia had the privilege of being the summer residence of Bishops and Cardinals, a role witnessed by the beautiful Palazzo della Loggia with a cylindrical tower overlooking a rectangular square located inside the old village.

Palazzo della Loggia includes a beautiful loggia, from which it takes its name, frescoed with scenes taken from the Aeneid and the Bible, alternating with views of Bagnaia, Florence and Siena, as well as a notable plan of Rome.

There is also a main floor decorated with frescoes and comprising rooms embellished with bucolic scenes, linked to the sowing and harvest.
