Barumini (Sardinia): what to see

post-title

What to see in Barumini, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Su Nuraxi, Nuragic Village and Giara di Gesturi park, as well as excursions to the surroundings.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Cagliari, from which it is 61 km away, Barumini is an agricultural center of the Marmilla, geographically located between the Giara di Gesturi and the Campidano.

The grandiose megalithic complex of Su Nuraxi, dating back to the period between the fifteenth and eleventh centuries, which was included in the defensive barrier of the Giara di Gesturi and the surrounding areas, consists of a central tower and four towers put in communication between their imposing masonry curtains, over 2 meters thick, which make up a large quadrilateral with an irregular shape.

The tower is located in an eccentric position, so as to leave room for the courtyard from which it is surrounded.

Of the tower located in the center there are the two cells relating to the respective lower floors, in addition to the elevated opening which was reached via a ladder and from which the internal staircase began to go up to the highest point.

The turreted bulwark, largely destroyed in the eleventh century BC, was rebuilt in the ninth century BC, with the addition of reinforcements to the walls and other smaller towers, thus assuming a polylobed configuration.

What see

The nuragic village develops around the fortress, of which only the bases of four circular huts remain, of which the largest was probably the council room.

The construction of the other huts dates back to the sixth century BC, i.e. to the period following the Punic conquest.

They were made following, rather than the megalithic technique, the procedure that involved the use of a compound based on small stones and clay.

This complex was active even at the time of the Romans, and remained so until the sixth century AD, later disappeared remaining submerged by a layer of soil, before returning to light again in 1949, following a great flood.

Nearby, at a distance of 10 km, there is Villamar, a picturesque agricultural center characterized by numerous murals made by local artists.
