post-title

Useful information on Basilicata, geographical features of the territory, from the Metaponto plain to the Pollino massif, main places of interest.

Tourist information

The territory of Basilicata forms a region bathed by the Gulf of Taranto, the Ionian Sea, the Gulf of Policastro and the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The region borders on the territories of Campania and Puglia, its provinces are Potenza and Matera.

In the mid-twelfth century, under Norman rule, the territory roughly corresponding to that of the current region, until then included in the ancient and historic district of Lucania, took the name of Basilicata.

Its inhabitants, called Basilischi or Basilicatesi, still recognize themselves as Lucani.

Basilicata is a predominantly mountainous and hilly region, the plain of Metaponto, which extends along the Ionian coast, is the largest in the region.

What see

In the Pollino Massif, on the border with Calabria, the homonymous National Park extends.

In its vicinity there is the Sirino Massif, one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Basilicata, where in winter it is possible to practice alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and excursions with snowshoes, while in summer the splendid beech woods, which cover its slopes invite to pleasant walks.

On the Tyrrhenian coast the seaside resort of Maratea is very popular, while on the Ionian coast there are various locations, including Metaponto, Nova Siri, Scanzano Jonico, Policoro, Pisticci Rotondella.
