Bibbiena (Tuscany): what to see

post-title

What to see in Bibbiena, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the Dovizi Palace, the Church of San Lorenzo and the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sasso.

Tourist information

Located in the province of Arezzo, Bibbiena is the largest center of the Casentino, located on the top and on the slopes of a hill, at 425 meters above sea level.

Near the center of Bibbiena traces of Etruscan settlements and Roman villas have been found.

During the Middle Ages it became a stronghold, was dominated by the Aretine bishops, and subsequently passed under the Florentine influence.

Among the most significant monuments, the sixteenth-century Palazzo Dovizi, in Renaissance style, belonged to the family of Cardinal Bernardo Dovizi, known as Bibbiena, secretary of Pope Leo X, diplomat and author of the Comedy La Calandria, considered the first Italian comedy in prose.

In front of the building there is the Church of San Lorenzo from 1474, inside which it is possible to admire two beautiful terracottas by Andrea della Robbia.

What see

In Piazza Tarlati, the original nucleus of the town, stands the imposing Clock Tower, which was originally part of the Tarlati Castle, later destroyed, of which a lower tower also remains at the rear.

To the right of Piazza Tarlati, in a widening area stands the church of San'Ippolito or Propositura, former chapel of the Tarlati castle, founded at the beginning of the twelfth century and then transformed into the current church.

Its interior, decorated with numerous frescoes dating back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, houses precious works of art.

About one kilometer from the town, there is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sasso, an architectural complex of great historical, artistic and religious value, a sign of the great Marian devotion of the people of Casentino.

The church, which dates back to 1204, was rebuilt in the current Renaissance forms between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth century.
