Tourist information

Located in the Pacific Ocean, this island is part of the Leeward Islands, which in turn fall within the Society Islands archipelago in French Polynesia.

In ancient times the island was a volcanic complex that slowly underwent a progressive sinking into the ocean.


Today the remains of the ancient volcano remain, Mount Otemanu which, with its 727 meters of altitude, is the highest peak of Bora Bora, and Mount Paihia, which reaches a height of 660 meters.

What see

Bora Bora is surrounded by a wonderful lagoon bordered by a coral reef that includes various islets, called Motu.

The coral reef surrounds the whole island, only in a point called the Teavanui passage, the lagoon is connected to the ocean.


Vaitape, the main center of Bora Bora, is located on the west coast of the island and is connected to the airport, located on Motu Mute, by a convenient catamaran service.

The airport was built by the Americans in 1943 as an American military base was placed in Faanui Bay during the Second World War.

On the beautiful beach of Matira, south of the island, the participants of the Hawaiki Nui Va'a, the traditional Polynesian canoe race that takes place every year on the waters surrounding the leeward islands, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa and Bora Bora.

Tourist facilities are located largely in the southern end of Bora Bora and on the Motu.
