Brasilia is located about 1000 meters above sea level, near the Paranoá artificial lake.

The city was created from scratch with the aim of transferring the capital to the interior of the country, in order to promote its development.


Brasilia, after Salvador da Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, is the third capital of Brazil, a dream come true in a few years, starting from February 1955, when the plateau of the state of Goias was chosen, as the area where the city, inaugurated on April 21, 1960 by the then President of the Republic Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira.

The project also called Pilot Plan was conceived by the architect and urban planner Lucio Costa, who collaborated with the architect Oscar Niemeyer, author of the architecture of the new capital, conceived from an architectural and urbanistic point of view, in a very futuristic way for that time.

Brasilia, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was an expression of an ideal of society projected towards a future of economic and social progress.


The plan of the city, initially designed in the shape of a cross, has been adapted to the topography and the natural slope of the ground, therefore it has the appearance of an airplane, with the central part and wings, or of a bird in flight, depending on imagination.

What see

Its harmonious urban landscape stands out for the creativity and balance of the buildings designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the most significant buildings are located around the Piazza dei Tre Poteri, a large space where the three buildings that represent the three powers of the Republic are located.

Palazzo Planalto, the official seat of the Presidency of the Republic, the president's operational and working place, while its official residence is in the Palazzo dell’Alba (Palacio da Alvorada).


The National Congress, seat of the legislative power, is composed of two domes, a convex, larger one, which represents the Chamber of Deputies, and a smaller concave one that represents the Senate.

The Supreme Federal Court is the elegant building that houses the judiciary.

Other structures of exceptional artistic quality are the Spianata dei ministri, the imaginative cathedral dedicated to Nossa Senhora Aparecida, the Pantheon by Juscelino Kubitschek and the National Theater.

Do not forget the Sanctuary of Don Bosco, designed by the architect Carlos Alberto Naves, a pupil of Niemeyer, a building characterized by grandiose blue Murano glass windows, located in the center of the city.

It was inaugurated in 1963, and originates from a dream of Don Bosco which concerned the area of ​​South America between the 15th and 20th parallel, where Brasilia would later arise.
