Camaldoli (Tuscany): what to see in the ancient hermitage

post-title

What to see in Eremo di Camaldoli, history of the monastery, pharmacy, guesthouse of the hermitage founded by San Romualdo in the heart of the Casentino forest.

Tourist information

Ancient center of spirituality wrapped in a fascinating landscape, the hermitage of Camaldoli constitutes a place where history and prayer merge.

In the National Park of Monte Falterona, Campigna and of the Casentinesi Forests, in the heart of Tuscany in the province of Arezzo, there is this very ancient monastery, including the monastery, at an altitude of 818 meters above sea level, and the hermitage that rises higher, at 1104 meters above sea level.

Wrapped in this fascinating and luxuriant secular forest, the two nuclei have origins dating back to the beginning of the 11th century, when the pious monk Romualdo, founder of the Camaldolese congregation of the Order of San Benedetto, arrived in these places, who built the Hermitage and he rearranged the hospice.

The monks have always taken care of the forest, protecting and enriching it, until 1866 when the area was forfeited by the state property.

What see

The architectural complex gathers the ancient hospice or guesthouse, the church, the Camaldoli monastery, from the 16th century, and the ancient pharmacy.

The road that climbs up to the Hermitage, located within the forest about 3 kilometers from the monastery, is very suggestive.
