What to see in Canterbury, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including the ancient Cathedral with the Romanesque crypt.

Tourist information

Canterbury is a city located in Kent, a county in southern England southeast of London, which has a population of around 45,000.

In ancient times this place was a village until it became a town in 560 where in 597 St. Augustine founded the first Christian diocese located in Great Britain and completed his generous work of evangelization with the baptism of the King of Kent.

What see

The Cathedral constitutes one of the oldest Christian churches in England, a very significant piece of history of the British Church before the Anglican reform.

In this place of worship, Archbishop Thomas Becket was assassinated in 1170, guilty of not having signed the Clarendon Assize, with which King Henry I Plantagenet arrogated power over the Church of England.

After Becket's killing, the cathedral became a destination for Catholic pilgrimages.

This splendid building was founded in 597 with the arrival from Rome of its first archbishop Augustine.

Over the centuries the Canterbury cathedral was rebuilt several times, the first building was destroyed by a serious fire in 1067, after which the Romanesque style was adopted for the rebuilding.

Currently the most interesting part of this church is a large Romanesque crypt built in 1100.
