Casalbordino (Abruzzo): what to see

post-title

What to see in Casalbordino, itinerary including the main places of interest in this renowned tourist resort in the province of Chieti, washed by the Adriatic Sea.

Tourist information

The origins of this charming holiday resort in Abruzzo date back to the ninth century, as evidenced by the remains of the Benedictine abbey of Santo Stefano partly hidden by the sand.

In the historic center there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli, a destination for pilgrimages, which preserves inside, with three naves with a dome, the painting of the Madonna that appeared in 1576 Alessandro Muzio.

The bronze portal with the fifteen panels depicting the mysteries of the Rosary and the representation of the apparition of the Madonna in the central part, built in 1988 by Giuseppe Madonna, is also very beautiful.

In the right portal, which was made by Antonio di Spaltro, the 8 panels depicting the life of San Benedetto stand out.

In the literary work of Gabriele d’Annunzio, written in 1894 and entitled "The triumph of death", the poet writer describes the sanctuary as a compulsory stop for local and Fossacesia pilgrims.

D’Annunzio first describes the meticulous description of a mass in honor of the Madonna who appeared in Casalbordino and then goes on to the review of the sick and prostitutes who enter the church, complaining and imploring forgiveness and grace without restraint.

What see

The church of San Salvatore, which is the main building of worship, is in neoclassical style, although the original conformation dates back to the fourteenth century.

The civic tower, completed in 1901 by the engineer Antonino Liberi from Pescara, who was brother-in-law of Gabriele D’Annunzio, is 45 meters high.

The Fonte Vecchia, which dates back to the 16th century and was remodeled several times, is located in the place where the historic gardens of Casalbordino were located, an area historically rich in springs.

The main front of the fountain is rectangular in shape, made of brick with a frame with two pilasters, with seven spouts available to source spring water.
