post-title

What to see in Castiglioncello, itinerary including the main places to visit, including the beach of the Quercetano bay, the promenade and the Pasquini Castle, built in a place that was previously part of the property of Diego Martelli.

Tourist information

Castiglioncello is a famous holiday resort located on the Tyrrhenian coast in the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo, in the province of Livorno, in Tuscany.

The jagged stretch of coast, rich in cliffs and pine forests, characterizes the enchanting landscape of Castiglioncello, which stands on the tip of a promontory inhabited since Etruscan times, in a splendid panoramic position on the coast.

The tourist development of the locality began in the second half of the nineteenth century, when Diego Martelli, art critic and patron, established his residence in Castiglioncello.

This illustrious character hosted a group of artist friends, who later became famous with the name of Macchiaioli who, inspired by the beauty of the place, gave life to the famous School of Castiglioncello.

In the sixties of the twentieth century, Castiglioncello was frequented by famous representatives of the world of cinema, including Alberto Sordi, Marcello Mastroianni and the couple Panelli – Valori, who had chosen this place to spend their holidays in their respective villas.

In the same period, some scenes of the famous film Il Sorpasso, made by the director Dino Risi, were shot in this location.

What see

The coast of Castiglioncello, equipped with bathing establishments, offers a very beautiful sandy cove, with a clear sea, known as the beach of the Quercetano bay.

The panoramic promenade, named after Alberto Sordi, and the cool Marradi pine forest, which runs through the center of the town, offer the opportunity to make beautiful walks.

From Piazzetta Vittoria it is possible to reach the Pasquini Castle, a cultural center and venue for exhibitions and shows, which was built at the end of the nineteenth century by Baron Lazzaro Patrone, where Diego Martelli's house was once located.
