Tourist information

Located in the province of Ragusa and famous for the cultivation of olives, almonds and renowned wines, Comiso is a Sicilian town with very ancient origins, dating back to the seventh century BC, when its name was Casmene.

Among the monuments to be seen is the Fonte Diana, located in Piazza del Comune, in which the water flows which in the second century BC. it fed the Roman baths, of which the remarkable mosaic pavement exhibited in the municipal library is still visible.

The fortification walls are from the Byzantine era and were built to defend a Comiso that was very prosperous at the time from enemy attacks.

A portion of the city center is instead endowed with a Baroque imprint, as it was rebuilt after the earthquake that occurred in the late seventeenth century, which caused extensive damage.

What see

Among the most prestigious buildings, it is worth mentioning the Aragonese Castle, originally in pure Gothic style, but subsequently reworked during the sixteenth century.

The oldest parts consist of the entrance portals and a completely frescoed tower dating back to the thirteenth century.

Among the churches we must mention the Church of San Francesco, dating back to 1300, to which the convent and cloister in Arabic style were added in later periods, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Stelle, built between the end of the fourteenth century and the beginnings of the fifteenth century in a place in front of the waters of the Fonte Diana, where there were previously the remains of an ancient 1100 temple dedicated to Santa Maria del Mulino, a name deriving from its proximity to a mill.
