Santa Adelaide

Santa Adelaide was born in Burgundy in ca. 931 and died in the monastery of Selz in Alsace on 16 December 999

His father was Rodolfo, king of Burgundy, and his mother Berta, daughter of Burcardo, duke of Swabia.

In 947 Adelaide married Lotario, king of Italy, but was widowed after only three years of marriage.

After being put in prison by Berengario II of Friuli, later King of Italy and Emperor, because she refused to marry her son, she was freed by Otto I, who she will marry and have three children with, including the future Otto II.

After the death of these he exercised the protection of the minor Otto III, his grandson, holding the empire.

Adelaide was very cultured, was always attentive to the least and was an authoritative character in imperial politics, both in Italy and in Germany.

When Otto III came of age, Adelaide devoted herself to works of charity and strongly supported the reform movement of Cluny, with the abbots Maiolo and Odilone.

In recent years she retired to the Benedictine convent of Seltz she founded in northern Alsace, where she died on December 16, 999.

In 1097 Adelaide was canonized by Pope Urban II.
