Sant'Anastasio

Saint Anastasio was born in Persia in the seventh century and died in Resafa on January 22, 628.

His name was Magundat when he joined the Persian army of King Cosroe, but the Christian religion attracted him to the point of deserting him to go to Jerusalem, where he received the baptism and the new name of Anastasius.

Anastasio retired to the monastery and then went to Caesarea di Palestina then subject to the Persians, where he was captured and tortured because he refused to renounce his faith.

After suffering incredible torments and seeing his companions and many other Christians strangled, he too was strangled and beheaded.

Around 640 his relics were moved to Rome and already in 650 there are documents that indicate the monastery of the Acque Salvie, in the abbey complex of the Tre Fontane, as the place where the head of Sant'Anastasio was located.

One of his relics is venerated at the Scala Santa in Rome.
