San Pietro Canisio

Doctor of the Church, born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in 1521, he made the utmost commitment to defending the Catholic faith against the attacks of the novices.

Son of the burgomaster of the city, he had the opportunity to study canon law in Leuven and civil law in Cologne.

In this city he spent most of his free time visiting the Carthusian monastery and reading the short brochure of the Spiritual Exercises that St. Ignatius had written just before.

This particular lifestyle caused the most important turning point in his life which led him to enter the Society of Jesus, after a period of preparation under the guidance of Father Faber.

He was responsible for the publications relating to the works of San Cirillo di Alessandria, San Leone Magno, San Girolamo and Osio di Cordova.

He actively participated in the Council of Trent, in the function of theologian of Cardinal Truchsess and of the pope's adviser.

Saint Ignatius called him to Italy, sending him first to Sicily and then to Bologna, to then send him back to Germany, where he remained for thirty years, holding the position of provincial superior.

Pius V proposed that he accept the cardinalate, but Pietro Canisio preferred to respond to the pope who preferred to continue his humble service to the community.

Before dying in Freiburg in 1597 he took part in the sessions of the Council of Trent and wrote two works of catechism which reached a considerable diffusion.
