San Saba Archimandrita

Saba Archimandrita was born in Cappadocia in about 439 and was accepted at a young age at the monastery of Flabiana.

Throughout his life he lived as a monk, making experiences of community life and favoring the foundation of the community of hermits "Grande Laura" in the Cedron valley.

In fact, this congregation developed spontaneously around him, who in the meantime had retired to a cave that was difficult to access, where he lived in the company of only the animals present in the desert.

As soon as they noticed his presence, other monks settled in the numerous caves in the area and built an oratory, where they used to meet only on some days of the week to carry out particular tasks.

Grande Laura therefore had its headquarters in a settlement made up of hermits, who had chosen to live in solitude, subjected to Saba's spiritual guide.

Following the example of Grande Laura, many other communities of that kind were born, which in turn brought together thousands of other monks animated by the same desire for solitude, living a life entirely dedicated to God.

With excellent organizational skills, Saba became very famous, but using his reputation only for beneficial purposes.

With courage he made intercession work in Constantinople with the emperor in favor of the poorest, harassed by very high taxes.

When the Monophysite heresy affected the Eastern Church, causing a considerable upheaval, Saba led a large group of monks with the task of ensuring that Catholic bishops were not intimidated or blackmailed.

At his intercession the people recognized the merit of having put an end to a period of persistent drought.

Saba died at 93 and was immediately venerated as a saint by the faithful.
