Blessed Virgin Mary of Lourdes
In 1858 the Immaculate Virgin Mary appeared to Benedetta Soubirous in the "Massabielle" cave, located in Lourdes.
Using this humble servant, Our Lady called sinners to conversion and stirred up an intense movement of prayer and charity in the Church.
In the place indicated by Bernadette as the one where the apparitions had taken place, a statue of the Madonna was placed in 1864.
In the area around the cave of the apparitions, a large sanctuary was built after which millions of pilgrims come on pilgrimage every year.
February 11, 1858 was the date of the first apparition, when Bernadette was in Massabielle to collect wood in the company of a sister and friend.
While she was intent on taking off her stockings to cross the Gave River, she heard a sound similar to the rustle of the wind and looking towards the cave she saw a mysterious Lady.
Bernadette, after having made the sign of the cross, joined her in the recitation of the Holy Rosary.
After the prayer, the Lady disappeared suddenly.
