The saint of the day February 12 is Santa Eulalia of Barcelona, which name day is celebrated and other saints who are celebrated on this date.

Santa Eulalia in Barcelona

Eulalia of Barcelona, a very young Spanish martyr, is depicted in the mosaics of Santa Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna amidst two other teenage martyrs, Agnese and Cecilia, also the two saints named Eulalia, remembered on February 12 and December 10, appear to be the same person.

The first, venerated in Barcelona, would have suffered martyrdom at the time of the empire of Diocletian, between 284 and 305, the second, martyred in Mérida, would have been martyred during the tetrarchy of Maximian, Constantius, Diocletian, Galerius, correspondent to the period between 292 to 305.

According to current hagiographic studies, it is believed that he is a single saint, being the split based exclusively on two different narratives of their martyrdom.

The Passion of the Eulalia of Barcelona certainly does not go back to a period before the seventh century and its inspiration to the Passion of the Eulalia of Mérida is evident, which in turn derives from the third hymn of the Peristephanon that the poet Prudentius wrote about 405 in honor of the Spanish martyr.

According to what written by Prudenzio, Eulalia was a girl just thirteen years old when her father, to protect her from the dangers of the anti-Christian persecution, took her away from the city of Mérida, delivering her in custody to a friend family who lived in the countryside.

Eulalia cultivated in her heart the hidden hope of being included in the list of martyrs.

At night he fled the village and presented himself to the judge of Mérida, pronouncing as the only word "Credo".

The Eulalia in Barcelona seems to have been much more talkative, to the point that he openly reprimanded the prefect Daziano for the persecution he had begun.

This was a clear profession of faith in Jesus Christ, so effective that the magistrate was moved and tried to save her life, trying to convince her to deny her faith, but in vain.

The torture then began, sharp points stuck in the flesh of the young woman and in the instant in which the brave martyr reclined his head, a white dove came out of his mouth and went up into the sky.
