Valentine's day

Born in Terni in about 176 and died in Rome on February 14, 273, Valentino, after growing up in a patrician family, was elected bishop of Terni at just twenty-one years old.

The news regarding his life is scarce, it is known that he had to suffer martyrdom because he did not want to deny his Christian faith.

In 270 Valentino was in Rome, where he had arrived at the invitation of the Greek and Latin speaker Craton, who appreciated his way of preaching the Gospel and converting non-believers.

When Emperor Claudius II the Gothic ordered him to suspend the religious celebration and renounce his Christian faith, Valentino refused, trying to get the emperor converted to Christianity.

Rather than beheading him, Claudius II granted him pardon and entrusted him to a noble family.

Valentino was arrested a second time under Aureliano, succeeding Claudio II.

The empire continued in its persecutions against Christians and, as Valentino's popularity was growing, Roman soldiers captured him and took him out of town along the Via Flaminia to scourge him, fearing that the population could rise up in his defense.

He was beheaded on February 14, 273 at 97 years of age, at the hands of the Roman soldier Furius Placidus, who responded to the orders of the emperor Aurelian.

He is revered as a saint and is considered patron of lovers and protector of epileptics.
