San Gerlando of Agrigento

Bishop Gerlando distinguished himself for having been able to reorganize the diocese of Agrigento, following the long Muslim occupation that affected the territory between 829 and 1086.

Some scholars of the matter believe that Gerlando was born in Besançon and that he was appointed primicerio of the choir in the church of Mileto in Catanzaro by Roger I of the Altavilla, great count of Sicily.

After the liberation of Agrigento from the Arab occupation and the reestablishment of the ecclesiastical hierarchy on the island, Gerlando was appointed in 1088 by the same count Roger, bishop of the city with subsequent consecration to Rome by Pope Urban II.

His intense work aimed at reorganizing the Christian community of Agrigento, which today venerates him as patron, led him in just six years to build the episcope and cathedral, dedicated respectively to the Madonna and San Giacomo.

He was also responsible for the fortification of the Castle of Agrigento, which at that time was called Girgenti, a name derived from the Arabic one "Gergent".

He took part in the Mazara conference in 1098 and baptized the Arab lord Chamud, later called Roger Achmet.

He died on February 25, 1100.
