Saint Oswald Bishop

St. Oswald of Worcester was an English bishop, archbishop of York from 972 until his death on February 29, 992.

Saint Osvaldo, son of Danish parents, played an important role in reforming the Benedictine monastic rule.

Under the spiritual direction of his uncle, the archbishop of Canterbury Odo, Oswald entered the monastery of Fleury, France, a large Benedictine center.

After Odo's death in June 958, Oswald returned to England and in 961 he was consecrated bishop of Worcester from Dunstan, archbishop of Canterbury.

After his appointment, Oswald re-founded various Benedictine monasteries including those of Westbury-on-Trym and Winchcombe in Gloucestershire and Pershore in Worcestershire.

Its main foundation was the Ramsey monastery in Huntingdonshire, which became a large religious center, such as that of Fleury in France.

In 972 Oswald was transferred to the archiepiscopal see of York, but was also authorized to maintain the seat of Worcester, where he habitually resided.

In a biography of an almost contemporary of Oswald, his personal qualities, the kindness, courtesy and joyfulness that made him very much loved by the people are highlighted.
