Francavilla al Mare (Abruzzo): what to see

post-title

What to see in Francavilla al Mare, itinerary including the main places of interest, including the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Michetti Museum and the Naval Museum.

Tourist information

Destroyed almost completely during the Second World War, Francavilla al Mare was rebuilt with a modern imprint and expanded along the coastal strip, which is characterized by extensive sandy beaches.

Thanks to its beaches and the unquestionable quality of its sea, Francavilla al Mare is one of the most renowned seaside destinations in the area.

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, dating from the nineteenth century, preserves inside a monstrance in gilded and enameled silver from 1413, the work of the artist Nicola da Guardiagrele.

What see

Palazzo San Domenico, once a town hall and a convent respectively, was rebuilt in 1948 and currently houses the Michetti Museum, where there are valuable paintings by the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, inspired by traditional processions and festivals in Abruzzo.

Despite the bombings suffered in past wars, in Francavilla al Mare there are still some towers of medieval origin, including the Masci Tower, the Silver Tower and the Ciarrapico Tower, which houses the Naval Museum, named after the founder Enzo Maio Masci, a sailor of long experience to whom the exhibited collection is due, relating to various navy memorabilia, with particular reference to the forty Francavillese sailors who fell in the Second World War.

A very popular event is the Carnival of Abruzzo, also called Francavillese, which is one of the most deeply rooted traditional anniversaries in Francavilla al Mare.
