Located at about three hundred meters above sea level, in the territorial area in the province of Rome, part of the protected natural area called the Castelli Romani Regional Park, Frascati is a city of Roman origin, as evidenced by some archaeological remains found in the area, including those of the villa of Lucullus.

The surrounding area, mainly intended for agriculture, is famous for being the area of ​​origin of the particular type of grape with which the Frascati Doc wine is produced, which is among the most renowned wines produced in the geographical area of ​​the Castelli Romani .


In the historic center of Frascati, it is worth visiting the Cathedral of San Pietro, which has a facade flanked by two bell towers, dating back to the end of the seventeenth century, the work of Girolamo Fontana built using Tuscan stone, extracted from the quarries of Monte Porzio Catone, and the Tivoli travertine.

The plan of the interior of the Cathedral is a Greek cross, with a quadrangular apse, completely frescoed before the bombing suffered in 43, which destroyed part of the pictorial works.

Above the high altar there is the high relief depicting the Handing over of the keys to Peter, made in 1612 by the Florentine sculptor Pompeo Ferrucci.


In this cult building there is also the panel of the Madonna del Gonfalone, dating back to the fourteenth century.

What see

The Church of Santa Maria in Vivario, also known as the Church of San Rocco and in the past Cathedral of Frascati, was built around the twelfth century over the remains of the Roman villa of Lucullus.

The ancient Rocca di Frascati, currently used as a Bishop's Palace, is an imposing building dating back to medieval times.


Inside there is a porticoed courtyard from the 1400s, moreover some internal rooms are decorated in Pompeian style.

Frascati is famous for the Ville Tuscolane, a series of noble villas built by the papal nobility since the sixteenth century, with the aim of creating new meeting and meditation places.

Villa Aldobrandini, located on a hill overlooking the entrance to the town and from which you can enjoy a suggestive panorama, Villa Falconieri, deserve to be visited, for the construction of which important architects contributed, including Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Borromini, Villa Torlonia, Villa Grazioli and Villa Mondragone.

Do not miss the Ethiopian Museum of 1909, which preserves important relics related to the period of Italian colonialism in Ethiopia.
