Friedberg (Germany): what to see

post-title

What to see in Friedberg, itinerary including the main monuments and places of interest, including Castle, Walls, Church of San Giacomo and Piazza Santa Maria.

Tourist information

The ancient fortified city of Friedberg was founded in 1264 to protect the ducal borders of the Wittelsbacher.

Approaching from a distance you immediately notice the mighty city walls with ramparts and towers.

The fortification, partly well preserved, dates back to the early 15th century, as confirmed by the late Gothic commemorative table placed on the western wall of the Church of San Giacomo.

In addition to what remains of the walls, it is interesting to see the central Piazza di Santa Maria with its pretty fountain, the Marian column and the town hall, which was built in 1674 following the style of Elias Holl.

What see

Friedberg Castle was built in 1552 to replace an earlier 13th century complex that belonged to the Wittelsbacher.

Inside the imposing building there is currently a regional museum where you can admire a collection of the Fayence ceramic manufacture, once active in the place, Friedberg's clocks and a series of works by local artisans.

To the east of the city core is the Herrgottsruh Shrine, whose name derives from a miraculous image of 1496, where Jesus exhausted is depicted on his way to Golgotha, during a rest break.

The church was built in 1731 and is very light in its turn with excellent frescoes on the dome and artistic stuccos by the master of Wessobrunn Feichtmayr.

Among the altars, the altar of the brotherhood and the altar of miracles should be mentioned, for centuries a destination for pilgrimages.

Also interesting is the church "St Afra im Felde", located outside the city in the same place where there was a previous church from 978.
