Tourist information

Located at the mouth of the Isonzo river, Gorizia has as its symbol the Castle, a defensive structure dating back to the eleventh century that overlooks the historic center.

Inside the castle, furnished with original furniture and accessories, there is the Museum of the Middle Ages of Gorizia, which preserves reproductions of white weapons and siege machines.

In the central courtyard you can see the remains of the old eleventh century tower, while above the entrance there is a statue depicting the lion of San Marco, symbol of the Serenissima Republic.

A public park develops on the hill around the castle.

In addition to the castle, one of the main monuments to visit in Gorizia includes the fifteenth-century Church of Santo Spirito, which is one of the oldest churches in Gorizia, characterized by a beautiful stone facade including a small cusp-shaped portico.

The works for the construction of this religious building began in 1398, under the guidance of Michele and Giovanni de Rabatta, and were completed in 1414, in the place of construction of the church there was first a chapel dedicated to San Acazio.

What see

The Cathedral of Gorizia, with an interior with three naves and dedicated to Saints Ilario and Taziano, constitutes the main religious building in Gorizia.

The exterior has a gabled façade comprising a gable section, with a central wooden portal surmounted by two pilasters.

Above the portal there is a shelf, on which a statue of the Madonna of 1887 rests, while on the top of the roof a cross appears with two arms and flanked by two severed obelisks.

On the south side of the building stand an Angel with a cartouche, dating back to 1471, and a sundial, created by the sculptor by Giuseppe Barzellini in 1778.
