Horehound properties

Perennial herb with heights varying between thirty and eighty centimeters, the Marrobbio is characterized by erect stems, hard and with few branches.

The lower leaves have a few centimeters long petiole and an almost round lamina, while the upper ones are characterized by a smaller petiole and an oval lamina.


The margin of the leaves is irregularly crenated and the ribs are very deep set.

The flowers are gathered at the axil of the leaves, while the corolla, just protruding, is off-white in color with the upper lip elongated and bifid.

Flowering grass cleaned from the main branches and dried in a shady place is used.


As regards the properties, Marrobio acts as a heartbeat regulator, as a tonic, bitter, expectorant and emmenagogue.

In cases of typhoid and paratyphoid, fresh juice is used with moderate efficacy, which exerts an anti-thermal action that helps to bring down the fever and consequently to make the patient regain his strength, thus shortening the course of the disease.

It acts with beneficial effects on the respiratory mucous membranes, increasing the secretion, which is fluidized and made amicrobial before being removed.


In this sense it is very useful for combating the phlegm of the bronchi and lungs, as well as coughing.

Having tonic effects and a bitter taste, it stimulates the appetite without however damaging the digestive functions, which is why it is also recommended for tuberculotics.

To prepare an infusion, you need about 30 grams of leaves per liter of water, to rest for about twenty minutes before drinking two or three cups a day.
