Where is it

More than half of Hungary's territory is flat, the mountain ranges are not very high, the highest mountain is the Kèkes, with its 1,014 meters of altitude.


A mountainous area extending along the northern border, east of the Danube, includes the Matra and Bukk mountains.

The Danube crosses Hungary from north to south, dividing it into two sections: the eastern part of the Danube, known as the great plain, and the western part called Transdanubia.

The great plain is a large area which also includes the Hungarian Puszta, the fascinating Hungarian steppe.


In the Transdanubian region there is a flat area called Little Alfold and from north to south we find the Bakony chain, Lake Balaton and isolated, the Mecsek Mountains.

Hydrography

The Danube crosses Hungary from north to south, passes through Budapest and is navigable for most of the year.

Another important river is the Tibisco which flows almost parallel to the Danube.


On the border with Austria is Lake Neusiedl (Ferto). Lake Balaton, (the Hungarians' sea) is the largest lake in Central Europe, and is surrounded by tourist and spa resorts.

Climate

Hungary's climate has continental features with cold winters and hot summers. In winter the cold comes mainly from Russia.

In summer, the influence of the sub-tropical anticyclone and the distance from the sea can in some cases cause temperatures to rise, creating a feeling of mugginess.

The population of Hungary is made up of Hungarians and minorities of Roma, Germans, Slovaks and Romanians.

The time in Hungary is the same as in Italy throughout the year.

The official language in Hungary is Hungarian, (it belongs to the group of Finno-Ugric languages).

Hungary has been part of the European Union since 2004.

The Hungarian government is currently making a policy geared towards entering the euro into the country.

The national income mostly comes from the tertiary sector (financial activities, real estate, economic services, community services, tourism).


The metallurgical, chemical, construction, food and automotive engine manufacturing industries are present.

In the agricultural sector, the cultivated land covers a good part of the territory with crops of cereals, sugar beets, barley, potatoes, sunflower, rye and peppers (paprika).

Viticulture (tokaj wine) and the breeding of cattle, pigs, sheep are also important.

When to go

Preferred months for a trip to Hungary are from April to October.

How to get

Car
From Italy you can reach Hungary via Vienna on the highway to Budapest or from Graz to Kormend (Hungary).

Hungary can also be reached via Gorizia towards Ljubljana and then Maribor (Slovenia) to Letenye (border point) and Nagykanizsa (Hungary).

To travel on the Hungarian motorways it is mandatory to have a motorway toll sticker.

Train
A train leaves for Monfalcone (Gorizia) every day to Budapest.

Bus
The Eurolines company connects the major Italian cities with Hungary.

By air
Alitalia, Wizz Air, Ryanair operate direct flights between Italy and Hungary.
