San Raimondo de Penafort

Born in 1175 in Barcelona, ​​he was a relevant figure in the history of the Church and especially in the Dominican Order, which included Holy Friday of 1222.

Son of Catalan nobles, he began his studies in Barcelona and finished them in Bologna, where he met the Genoese Sinibaldo Fieschi, future Pope Innocent IV.

Returning to Barcelona, ​​Raimondo was named canon of the cathedral

Having opened a convent of the Order of Preachers in 1222, a religious congregation that had been founded a few years earlier by Saint Dominic,
Raimondo decides to leave the office of canon to become a Dominican.

In 1223 he provided support to Pietro Nolasco to found the Order of Mercedari dedicated to the redemption of slaves.

A few years later in Rome Gregory IX instructed him to collect and order all the documents issued by the popes in dogmatic and disciplinary matters, answering any questions on the matter or intervening on specific situations to be assessed case by case.

In 1234 he refused the Pope's offer to assume the office of archbishop of Tarragona.

In 1238 his confreres elected him general of the Dominican Order.

At the age of 70, he returned to live a life based more on prayer, the study and training of new preachers in the Order.

Brother Raimondo died in Barcelona in 1275.
