San Benedetto da Norcia
San Benedetto da Norcia, born in Norcia in 480 and died in Cassino in 547, was an Italian monk and founder of the Benedictine Order and was proclaimed patron of Europe on 24 October 1964 by Pope Paul VI.
Saint Benedict, brother of Saint Scholastica, when he was 12 years old was sent with his sister to study in Rome, later at the age of seventeen, together with his nurse Cirilla, he settled in the Aniene valley near today's Affile, where a legend tells that he would have performed his first miracle by fixing a screen damaged by the same nurse.
Later, alone, he headed towards Subiaco where he met Romano, a monk in a nearby monastery, who pointed out to him a difficult to reach cave located on Mount Taleo, now included within the monastery of the Sacro Speco, where Benedict led a hermit life for three years.
Subsequently he returned to Subiaco announcing the Word of God and welcoming pilgrims whose number grew more and more over time, so much so that Benedict decided to create a community consisting of thirteen monasteries, each with docent monks and their own abbot, but all subjected to his spiritual guide.
In the years between 525 and 529, after an attempt at poisoning carried out with a piece of poisoned bread, Benedetto decided to leave Subiaco to save his monks, heading towards Cassino where, on top of a hill, he founded the abbey of Montecassino, built on the remains of pagan temples.
In Montecassino Benedetto wrote his Rule in 540, a synthesis of the Gospel which had the purpose of organizing the life of the monks.
